Today, the Peña family operates stores in New York City, Long Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, South Carolina, and North Carolina. The success with which the first store was met encouraged the family to open a sister store in Brentwood, New York. After three years of working to make this dream a reality, the first Compare Foods opened its doors to serve the community of Freeport, New York in October 1989. This new chain would be known as Compare Foods. With the experience of operating these stores, Eligio Peña had the vision of a grocery stores chain that would provide quality products, exceptional service, and low prices to the community. A visitor from Columbia wanted to go and found it to have many products from there. After the initial success of this first store, the family expanded in the grocery business, eventually having stores in Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, and Manhattan.
